Taman Werdhi Budaya, usually just called the Art Centre, is Bali’s main public arts complex. It opened in 1973 on Jalan Nusa Indah, east of the old town, and was designed by the Balinese architect Ida Bagus Tugur as a showcase of traditional architecture: pavilions, gateways, lotus ponds and bridges spread through gardens beside a small river.
The complex has exhibition halls for painting, wood carving and crafts, several indoor and outdoor stages, and the Ardha Candra, a large open-air amphitheatre seating several thousand. Every year from mid-June to mid-July it is the home of the Bali Arts Festival (Pesta Kesenian Bali), held since 1979.
Top things to do at Bali Art Centre (Taman Werdhi Budaya)
Go to the Bali Arts Festival
For about a month, village troupes from every regency of Bali perform dance, gamelan, shadow puppetry and drama here, on several stages from late morning until late evening. Almost all of it is free. It opens with a big street parade in Renon. See when to visit for timing.
Browse the galleries
Outside festival time, the exhibition buildings show Balinese painting in its different regional styles, wood and stone carving, masks and silverwork. It is quiet, and you may have the halls to yourself.
Shop the festival stalls
During the festival the grounds fill with stalls selling crafts, textiles and regional food from across Bali — one of the best places on the island to buy directly from makers.
Watch students rehearse
The Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI Denpasar) is next door, and dance and music students often use the centre’s stages. If you hear a gamelan, follow the sound.
