Where to stay in Denpasar & Sanur

Two very different bases, half an hour apart: the working city, or its beach.

Choosing where to sleep in Denpasar comes down to one question: do you want the city on your doorstep, or the sea?

Sanur is the answer for most leisure travellers. It is part of Denpasar, has a calm beach, a long seaside path and a huge range of hotels, and puts the old town, the airport and the harbour for the Nusa islands all within about half an hour. Central Denpasar and Renon suit travellers who are here for the markets, museums and food, those on business, and anyone who wants good-value rooms away from the tourist economy.

Practical advice

  • Nyepi: you cannot leave your hotel for 24 hours, so pick one with gardens, a pool and a restaurant, and book early — many run special packages.
  • Bali Arts Festival and school holidays (June–August): Sanur fills up; reserve well ahead.
  • Early boat or flight? North Sanur is closest to the harbour; the airport is 30–40 minutes from Sanur and 30–45 from the city centre.
  • Check the map: “Denpasar” in a hotel’s address can mean anywhere in the city, including Sanur. Look at the distance to the place you actually want to be.
  • Taxes: hotel rates in Indonesia normally have tax and service added; make sure you compare final prices.

Where to stay FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Denpasar or Sanur?

For most holidaymakers, Sanur: it is part of Denpasar but has the beach, more hotels and more restaurants, and the city centre is only 20–30 minutes away. Stay in central Denpasar if the markets, museums and local food are your main reason for coming, or if you want the lowest prices.

Which hotel is closest to Puputan Square and the Bali Museum?

The Inna Bali Heritage Hotel, the former Bali Hotel of 1927, is on Jalan Veteran a few steps from the square.

How far is Sanur from the airport?

About 15 km, usually 30–40 minutes by car along the bypass road.

Is Sanur good for families?

Yes. The lagoon is calm and shallow, the beach path is traffic-free and many resorts have large pools and gardens. It is one of the most family-friendly areas in Bali.

Are hotels in Denpasar cheaper than in Seminyak or Ubud?

Generally yes. City hotels cater mainly to Indonesian business and family travellers, and rates for a comparable standard are usually lower than in the main resort areas.
